In this project for the US Geological Survey ( USGS), MEGIS reviewed the names and locations of 6,769 civil and cultural points and the names, locations and elevations of 2,479 summit points, representing approximately one-third of Maine's Geographic Name Information System (GNIS) data. These points were compared to MEGIS point data sets, high resolution orthoimagery and scanned USGS topographic maps. MEGIS also contacted other state agencies and private sector organizations and searched websites for information on site names and locations. Suggested changes were submitted to USGS for consideration by the US Board on Geographic Names. |
